On the final Saturday of September, nine magnificent Ferraris gathered at the Silo Club in downtown Indianapolis to kick off our chapter’s inaugural overnight driving tour to the historic West Baden Springs Hotel.
Though morning construction forced a few quick detours through the city, we swiftly connected to the interstate before dropping anchor in Trafalgar to rendezvous with two of our southern Indiana members. their spouses and their cars. From there, the convoy was officially underway. With flawless autumn weather gracing the state, all nine of the spiders ran proudly with their tops down.
We cruised southward through Nashville and followed the winding ribbon of State Road 135 to a brief regroup and leg-stretch at the historic Story Inn. Re-energizing for the heart of the drive, we continued south on SR 135 before turning onto State Road 58. Cutting deep through the Hoosier National Forest, SR 58 lived up to its legendary reputation as one of the state’s premier driving roads, offering an exhilarating sequence of elevation changes and sweeping forested curves. After heading west toward Bedford and navigating a couple of minor southern detours, our pack arrived at the breathtaking West Baden Springs Hotel just before 4:00 PM. Members quickly settled into their premium rooms overlooking the magnificent, world-famous atrium.
As evening fell, the group reconvened in the Caddy Sinclair room for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. The culinary highlight of the evening was provided by fellow FCA member and gourmet chef Russell Babb, who treated everyone to an exquisite, house-made duck and pheasant terrine. From there, the group transitioned to a magnificent four-course dinner at Sinclair’s. While most turned in around 11:00 PM, a few adventurous souls tested their luck at the casino. As a lasting keepsake of an unforgettable weekend, every attendee received a custom embroidered polo shirt commemorating the tour and recognizing our two generous Ferrari dealer sponsors.
Sunday morning began with breakfast at Sinclair’s, followed by a leisurely morning of personal time. The weekend concluded on a high note as Simon Robinson, Julianne Robinson, and Russell Babb joined me for a challenging round of sporting clays before making the journey home. It was an extraordinary weekend of camaraderie, fine machinery, and unforgettable roads.
